General Motors said Monday it will provide a free GM loaner vehicle to any Chevrolet Volt owner who is concerned about the car’s post-crash safety and fire risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently opened an investigation into the safety of the lithium-ion batteries used in the Volt and other electric cars, like the Nissan Leaf, after a Chevy Volt caught on fire at the NHTSA test facility several weeks after the agency’s side pole crash test.
“The question is about how to deal with the battery days and weeks after a severe crash, making it a matter of interest not just for the Volt, but for our industry as we continue to advance the pursuit of electric vehicles,” Mark Reuss, president, GM North America, said in a statement.
“A vehicle loan program of this nature is well beyond the norm for a preliminary investigation, and it underlines our commitment to the vehicle and its owners,” Reuss said.
NHTSA said in its November 11 statement that there had been no other reports of fires in Chevrolet Volt cars sold to consumers and that they do not believe electric cars are at a greater risk of fire than any other vehicle. The Detroit News reports that GM has received “about 10 calls from owners since news broke of the fire risks. None have sought a replacement vehicle to date.”
NHTSA attempted to recreate the incident that caused the initial Volt battery fire, and says in its investigation summary that two of its three simulation tests “produced thermal events, including fire.”

2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD. Report: Glut of unsold pickups has GM critics fearing return to pre-bankruptcy habits. Some analysts are concerned that General Motors is falling back into old habits by producing far more vehicles than the market can support. Bloomberg is reporting that the automaker’s dealers are currently sitting on a 122-day supply of pickup trucks. That’s more than twice the average for most models.
Meanwhile, competition like the Ford F-150 hangs around its lots for about 79 days before finding a home. GM enjoyed similar performance between 2002 and 2010, when its Silverado and Sierra trucks averaged 79 days on the lot, but now says that the company is producing sufficient volumes to meet demand and that somewhere between 100 and 110 days will be the new normal moving forward.
But analysts interviewed by Bloomberg disagree, saying that a dated product, a slow economic recovery and overzealous production has led to an overstock scenario and that the automaker hasn’t learned any of the painful lessons of its bankruptcy. GM counters by suggesting that trucks require a larger dealer supply because of the variety of weight classes, cab and bed configurations and engine options. Away from the bright lights of the Geneva Motor Show comes the introduction of the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado at the Bangkok International Auto Show. Bet you didn’t know that, did you?
Weird as it looks to have an American mid-size pick-up have its debut at an unheralded Asian auto show, it’s worth noting that Thailand just happens to be the world’s largest market for mid-size pick-up trucks. Bet you didn’t know that either.
Featuring Chevrolet’s new design language, the new Colorado certainly looks the part of a heavy-hitter in a mid-size pick-up’s body. But the bigger question surrounding this pick-up doesn’t have anything to do with its aesthetic or performance specs, but rather on the possibility of the Colorado being sold in the US. Chevrolet has given no indication on that matter yet, but since the Silverado is the only pick-up on Chevrolet’s roster, it might make sense for the US market to be given a choice on which Chevy pick-up they might prefer.

The Chevrolet Colorado has been given a Pepperdust Metallic exterior paint finish that has been accented with polished aluminum details on the fascia. There are also integrated side steps and black-masked projector-style headlamps that have LED lighting elements. At the back of the truck, there’s a full-width LED-lit tailamp that strikes an imposing presence in and around the tail of the car when it’s illuminated. Other items worth noting include a streamlined “cab collar” design with a body-color hard tonneau cover on the bed, gray accents on the front, side, and rear lower moldings, side mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators, and a set of 20” aluminum wheels with a liquid metal finish and Stone Gray color wheel ports shod on a set of Cooper 285/50R20 ZEON LTZ tires.

Crossovers have gained the lion’s share of America’s utility attention over the past few years, but the SUV is anything but dead and gone. Until gas prices began to spike, those surviving body-on-frame (br)utes were actually selling fairly well. So is General Motors kicking itself for ending Trailblazer production instead of refreshing it? New spy video from Inside Line suggests that The General may have another off-road- and tow-ready utility vehicle on the way.
The post-jump video shows a pair of mid-size SUVs that appear to be based off the 2013 Chevrolet Colorado, a prototype of which also makes a cameo in the video. Judging by the chunky-looking running boards and solid rear axles, these prototypes are definitely SUVs and not tall cars. The heavily camouflaged vehicles appear to be tall and very square in appearance, and the shape of the Chevrolet grille appears pominently despite efforts to conceal its identity. Inside Line speculates that the finished product will likely hit the world stage in the next year, with production likely for 2013, though just because these prototypes were spotted around Detroit is no guarantee that the model will find its way into U.S. showrooms.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt makes its debut as General Motors’ first plug-in gas/electric vehicle. It is expected to see limited production in calendar 2010, with availability only in California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Washington, DC. Nationwide sales are slated for late-calendar 2011. GM calls this 4-passenger, 4-door hatchback an “extended-range electric vehicle,” because it has, in effect, two different drivetrains: an all-electric one (battery and motors) that drive the car for the first 40 or so miles after a full plug-in recharge, and a gas-powered hybrid system (with gas engine and fuel tank) that automatically takes over after that to give about another 300 miles of range. At that point, the fuel tank can be filled just as in a normal car to give another 300 miles of range. If the car can be plugged into a wall outlet, the battery can be fully recharged in about 10 hours on normal 120-volt household current, or four hours with a special 240-volt charging station. The gas engine is an 84-horsepower 1.4-liter 4-cylinder, but whether the electric motors are running by themselves or in combination with the gas engine, the combined total is 149 horsepower. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, front-side airbags, and driver and passenger knee airbags. Among the available features are a remote-charging and vehicle-control program that owners can download and run from Blackberry and Apple iPhone cell phones. Among other things, it allows the owner to pre-heat or pre-cool the vehicle before getting in. A navigation system is standard, as is a hard drive for storing digital-music files. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, front- and rear-obstacle detection, and a rearview camera are optional. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.
